一幕一场 Act I Scene I
In the 1950s, Shi Zhongman, an army propagandist, recorded the enthusiasm of new soldiers planting trees with the camera and notebook. A Le, the head of the army, came to express his condolences and saw Shi Zhongman, who looked like Ding Xiang, under the clove tree. Back in time, A Le told everyone the touching stories about the martyr Ding Xiang: In the 1910s, refugees could be found all over the ancient streets and alleys of Pingjiang in Suzhou City. Aunt Wu picked up an abandoned baby Ding Xiang and brought her up. In the face of cruel scene in Suzhou city, Ding Xiang, who had never been deeply involved in the world, was determined to change the situation with her actions. When she stepped into Soochow University, she met A Le, who was preaching to the students. Since then, she devoted herself to the revolution.
一幕二场 Act I Scene II
On a moonlit night, Shi Zhongman asked A Le to tell her all about Ding Xiang. In A Le’s view, Shi Zhongman present before him reminded him of Ding Xiang, and of his acquaintance with Ding Xiang: The Kunqu Opera Dream in Peony Pavilion was playing in Suzhou City. When walking through the crowds, Ding Xiang and A Le recognized each other. They were moved by the love between Du Liniang and Liu Mengmei and fell in love with each other. A Le gave the prepared red silk handkerchief to Ding Xiang. At the moment, the gunfire suddenly broke out, and Ding Xiang and A Le were separated by the fleeing crowd. The newspapers with the headline of “Shanghai Workers’ Strike” were widely distributed. Ding Xiang, without hesitation, devoted herself to the revolution and went to Shanghai to continue fighting.
一幕三场 Act I Scene III
In the 1930s, on the streets of Shanghai, Ding Xiang, a secret Communist Party member, worked for the Communist Party of China under the cover of opening a photo studio. She ran into A Le on the street, and they immediately joined the action to cover the comrades of the Central Special Operations Section of the Communist Party of China before they had time to be overjoyed at their meeting. Ding Xiang’s piano playing and A Le’s Erhu sound became the secret signs of underground work. Shanghai, shrouded in white terror, was suffocating. What Ding Xiang and A Le had was their mutual support. They got married, and the happiness at that moment resisted the pain of their separation. Ding Xiang was sent to Beijing on a mission. They did not know when they would meet again after this separation.
二幕一场 Act II Scene I
The Rain Flower Terrace, Nanjing. Le Dingxiang asked A Le for her name, the story of Ding Xiang was told again: On the streets of Beijing, Ding Xiang and progressive youths fought desperately against the military police. Unfortunately, Ding Xiang was arrested and escorted to the Rain Flower Terrace. Before the execution, Ding Xiang recalled her ideals, her first meeting with A Le, their wedding...... She gently stroked her slightly bulging abdomen, feeling the restlessness of a new life. With continuous gunfire resounding, Ding Xiang and several revolutionaries fell in a pool of blood. Hearing of Ding Xiang’s sacrifice, A Le was heartbroken. In the oath of “missing you, only by endless struggle and hard work can I realize your last wish”, he buried his head in that silk scarf that was still warm......
二幕二场 Act II Scene II
Looking at A Le, who was immersed in grief, Shi Zhongman was moved by the heroic deeds of martyr Ding Xiang, by the experience of A Le’s loss of love, and even more by the common revolutionary ideals of Ding Xiang, A Le and herself. Shi Zhongman held A Le tightly in her arms, and determined to warm his heart with her love. Shi Zhongman, healed A Le’s feelings of losing Ding Xiang for more than 20 years, married A Le and gave birth to her daughter, named Le Dingxiang.
二幕三场 Act II Scene III
The Rain Flower Terrace, Nanjing. A Le, Shi Zhongman and Le Dingxiang came to the statue of martyr Ding Xiang and held a memorial ceremony with others.
In Suzhou City, Le Dingxiang, A Le and Shi Zhongman explored the footprints of martyr Ding Xiang in the riverside of the moat, Dingxiang Alley, and Soochow University, etc. The story of Ding Xiang is like a flame of faith, illuminating the hearts of people. A new Suzhou is presented in front of people: there are many high-rise buildings and heavy traffic; people go forward together, passing the flame of faith, they sing and dance with happy smiles on their faces.
