Swan Lake is the 8th production created and adapted by Suzhou Ballet Theatre.
In a sense, Swan Lake is the synonymous of classic ballet, with an absolute status and convention. For Jiabin Pan and me, Swan Lake is the first ballet in our career and also the last one we bid farewell to the stage, which is very important deep in our hearts.
Front such a classic giant, how can we present it in our own way? As the directors, one of the most important reasons that makes us to adapt Swan Lake lately is that we have to carefully consider how to control the adaptation of the classic. We do not want this to be a slightly dusted antique taken out of the museum. The biggest challenge for our creation is how to retain the essence of the original work while at the same time to give our contemporary a new understanding of this work.
With respect and inheritance, we hope to present you a new Swan Lake that belongs to this era.
In the garden, Prince Siegfried fell into a dream that a beautiful Princess Odette came to pick flowers. Suddenly she was transformed into a beautiful white swan by the magic of the evil magician Rothbart.
A feather fell down from the sky.
On the eve of his birthday, Prince Siegfried holds a party and invites Banon and other friends to celebrate his coming of age. The Jester also comes and entertains them with antics. When the Queen comes to the garden, she presents the Prince with a crossbow and hopes that he would seriously consider his marriage. After the Queen is gone, the party begins anew. The Prince holds the flowers and in the trance the flower girl once appeared in his dream flashes again. That is the Princess turned into a swan by magic. As the music and dance resumed, Banon leads the guests in congratulating the Prince on his coming of age. When the party's over, the Prince is lost in thought, taking the swan feather picked up by the jester and looking at the crossbow in his hands. A line of swans flow past and the Prince follows.
By the swan lake, the evil magician Rothbart is waiting for a flock of swans approaching to the shore. They are beautiful girls who will return human forms at night.
The Prince comes to the lake and Rothbart hides. Suddenly, the Prince is surprised to see a swan turning into a beautiful maiden, who is the Princess appeared in his dream. Odette tells the Prince that the one and only power on earth which can break this evil spell is devoted love.
Unluckily Rothbart finds them and immediately obstructs, while the Prince wants to shoot him. Odette begs the Prince not to kill the evil magician, or the spell will never be broken. At dawn, the prince vows to save her from suffering, and this eternal love to remember.
The Queen prepares a grand ball for the Prince, who has to choose a bride among the well-bred maidens. However he remains indifferent to them all as his heart is given to Odette.
At this moment, the magician Rothbart arrives with his daughter Odile, dressed as a black swan. The prince is so confused by the black swan that he thinks she is the one he has fallen in love with at the lake.
As the Prince makes a promise of love, Odette by the window sees this all and leaves in despair. Plot done. The wicked magician is satisfied.
The Prince realizes that he has been deceived into breaking his vow. Odette is heartbroken and returns to the lake to tell the swan-maidens what has happened. The enraged sorcerer summons power while Odette and other swan-maidens struggles together to wake up the Prince in despair. The Prince finds Odette and begs to forgive him and professes his undying love for her. If the spell can’t be broken, the Prince and Odette will be apart forever. The angry Prince has a final fight with the magician. When the Prince is knocked down, Odette and swan-maidens fights back. Finally, the magic nest collapses and the sorcerer is defeated.
When all calm down, the Prince slowly wakes up and finds everything to be very far away and very strange. On the air, a piece of feather is falling and the Prince picks it up and puts it in his heart. Swear!
In the distance, Princess Odette is holding flowers.
Is this all just a dream?
